The original intent of the Women's Building was to provide a space for the sororities on WashU's campus. Sororities played an important role in creating community for female students at WashU.

Sororities on campus were introduced in 1898, with the first being Theta Sigma (2). Over WashU's history, it has had many different panhellenic sororities and cultural sororities. Currently, there are six Panhellenic sororities on campus, and 18% of the undergraduate population is part of Greek Life (4).
